The Newmont Akyem Mining Company is constructing a GHC 437,000.00 modern surgical theater for the New Abirem Government Hospital in the Birem North District.

The Newmont Akyem Mining Company is constructing a GHC 437,000.00 modern surgical theater for the New Abirem Government Hospital in the Birem North District.

The theater, which is expected to be completed in six months, consist of two theater rooms, two staff changing rooms, two bed recovery wards and three operating rooms .

Addressing a kick off meeting and ground breaking ceremony for the project, the General Manager Of Newmont Akyem Project , Mr Kevin Moxham said, health provided life and drove development, hence Newmont had made the provision of health infrastructure one of its core commitment in all its mining communities.

He said, the company had spent GHC2,000,000 for the provision of infrastructure such as maternity, female and male wards, nursing and doctors quarters, a 265 KV standby generator and a mechanized borehole for the hospital.

The General Manager said, Newmont has also partnered a Non-Governmental Organization(NGO), Project Care of USA to regularly provide assorted medical equipment, not only for the New Abirem Government Hospital alone, but also to nearby hospitals and satelite clinics nearby.

He said the huge investment the Newmont Akyem Project is making into health, education, security, water and sanitation, were aimed at providing quality life style to the people in the mining communities where the company operated.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Director of Ghana Health Service (GHS), Mr Mica Asare-Bediako, said the Ministry of Health (MOH), commended Newmont for the project and the chief of New Abirem for providing land for the project.

He assured that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) would post competent medical specialist to the hospital for it to become a mini- teaching hospital.

The District Chief Executive of Birem North, Mr Paul Aboagye Dadzie said, the aim of government in bringing health services to the door steps of the people had made government to promote the construction of a lot of Community Health Planning Services (CHPS) Compound throughout the country.

He said, the New Abirem Government Hospital used to transfer surgical cases to other hospitals but now with the construction of the theater, patients from Nkawkaw, Akim oda and Kade with surgical cases could seek treatment at the hospital.

Mr Dadzie said, the Assembly would be supporting the hospital with the construction of a mortuary to preserve dead bodies from New Abirem and surrounding communities.

The External Affairs Manager of Newmont , Mr Felix Apoh said, 129,000 US Dollars have been realized from the one dollar for every one ounce of gold produced by the company agreement with the mining communities and would soon be paid into the Akyem Project Development Foundation to support the development of the area.

The Chief of New Abirem, Obirempong Kwasi Amo Kyeretwire appealed to Newmont to help the community to establish a Vocational Training Institute to train the youth in technical skills to enable them seek employment elsewhere because the mining company alone could not employ all the 40,000 youth in the affected area.

The Abiremhene, later performed the ground breaking ceremony for the commencement of the project.
