56 Schools Participate In 61st Independence Day in Wa Municipal

A total of 56 schools, six cadet core and six other groups, including political parties, joined the security services to mark Ghana's 61st Independence Day parade in Wa, the Upper West regional capital.

The schools comprised 21 primary schools, 20 Junior High schools, three special schools, three private Vocational Technical Institutes and nine Senior High Technical and Vocational Schools.

St. Francis Xavier Senior High School in Wa was adjudged the winner of the march past in the SHS category while Wa SHS and Wa SHTS took the runner up first runner up positions respectively.

Limanyiri JHS emerged the winners of the JHS Category while Wa Girls Model JHS came second with Fongo E/A JHS placing third.

For the special schools category; Wa School for the Blind came first while the second and third positions went to Wa School for the Deaf and St. Don Bosco Special School respectively.

Wa Islamic Girls Cadet Core, WA SHTS Cadet Core and Wa SHS Cadet Core placed first, second and third positions respectively in the Cadet category.

The wining schools were presented with plaques while individual students also received certificates for their outstanding performances.

Mr. Amidu Chinnia Issahaku, the Acting Upper West Regional Minister, who was flanked by the Regional Education Director, Mr. Evans Kpebah and the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Otchere Boapea, took the parade salute.

Mr. Issahaku, who later read a speech on behalf of President Nana Akufo Addo, noted that, 'Ghana Beyond Aid' meant that the country would have to effectively harness its own resources and creatively and efficiently deploy them for rapid economic and social transformation.

'This will require hard work, enterprise, creativity, and a consistent fight against corruption in public life', he said.

'It will also require that we break from a mentality of dependency and adopt a confident can-do spirit, fuelled by love for our dear country, Ghana,' he added.

On the recent spate of armed robbery incidents in the country, the President referred to it as unacceptable and pledged his commitment to work to ensure that citizens were able to go about their daily duties in confidence and safely.

'I want to make this clear: no miscreant will have the space to terrorize citizens and generate a sense of insecurity in our country', he assured.
