Good governance

Good governance is dependent on the efficient and decentralised management of public policy whereby people are empowered to participate and influence the process of poverty reduction and the sustainable growth of the economy.

The prime principles upon which responsible governance rely include:

  • Accountability in both public and private sectors;
  •  Transparency of government decision making;
  • Timely access to justice;
  • Popular participation  in decision-making, decentralisation of responsibilities and devolution of power;
  • Observance of both rights and responsibilities; and
  • Discipline and observance of laws and  regulations in  both  public and  private sectors.

To achieve good governance at the district level, it is important to consider the local governance structures at that level, including traditional authorities, NGOs/CSOs, Area Councils and the decentralised department among others.

The Adaklu-Anyigbe District Assembly was established by Legislative Instrument 1741 of 2004 and it is the highest Political and Administrative Authority in the District. The current structure of the Assembly include of the District Coordinating Directorate and nine (9) Decentralised Departments out of eleven (11) statutory departments.

The district is in the process of ensuring the operation of the remaining departments. The District Planning Coordinating Unit (DPCU) which is responsible for Co-ordinating the development planning activities of the Assembly forms a very important component of this structure.

There are three (3) Traditional Areas in the district namely; Agortime, Ziope and Adaklu. The District has about 415 communities. The political head of the District Assembly is the District Chief Executive who represents the President of the Republic of Ghana in the District. However, the District Co-ordinating Director is the Head of the Administration that is the coordinating directorate.

The general Assembly, which is Legislative and Deliberative organ of the Assembly, is made up of ten (10) elected members and five (5) Government appointees. It is headed by the Presiding Member who presides over meetings of the Assembly. There is also one Member of Parliament (MP) from the area who is an ex-officio member of the Assembly.
