SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

There have been major improvements in the amount and quality of social and economic infrastructure in the Municipality since the inception of decentralized governance and the subsequent introduction of the District Assemblies Common Fund. The Municipal has a total of 213.1km of trunk roads and 240.6km of feeder roads.

The feeder roads and the highways are receiving greater attention since the inclement weather makes them impassable at greater part of the year. There is currently some reshaping and grading works going on along Acquai Allah-Kwaku Atta and Ebikwakrom - Enchi - Jensue Roads. In addition the Elubo-Enchi-Dadieso highway has also been awarded on contract for grading and spot improvement to make the road motorable for transportation of goods and people.

Besides, construction works have ended on double-culverts at Old Yakase and Wooden Foot Bridges at Enchi. These projects were executed with funds from Social Investment Fund and the Assembly. This compares favorably with other districts in the region, on the average. Apart from 2.5km of tarred road in Enchi, the Municipal capital, all other roads in the Municipality are laterite surfaced. Enchi, Dadieso and Achimfo have electricity and not less than 13 communities were expected to benefit from the rural electrification programme in 1999.

The Municipal Assembly’s efforts at providing potable water for over 80% of its people are achieving results through the construction of 105 boreholes, 55 hand-dug wells and small town water system with financial assistance from VIP, HIPC benefit and Social Investment Fund. There are 76 boreholes for potable water in 38 communities and another 16 hand-dug wells fitted with pumps in 13 other communities. Enchi, Achimfo and Old Yakosi have pipe-borne water. There are several other privately constructed wells.

There is one post office at Enchi and two postal agencies at Dadieso and Omanpe. Post and telecommunication facilities in the Municipality are still being developed and for now, only the Municipal capital is linked with the digital telephone facility. There are seven major periodic markets and another five major markets in the Municipality. Nearly all the manufactured good traded in these markets originate from outside the Municipality, mainly from Kumasi, Takoradi and Cote d’Ivoire.

Thirteen Communities have been selected from the Municipality to be hooked to the National Electricity Grid under the EU funded Rural Electrification Project. So far over seventy percent (70%) of the Communities have made ready Low Voltage Poles for work to begin.

Housing

The provision of housing for office and residential purposes has been of great concern to the Assembly since it is the bedrock for a successful implementation of the decentralization process in the Municipality with respect to attracting and retaining highly skilled manpower and ensuring efficient and effective coordination activities of all decentralized departments for proper development.

The Assembly has put up a six (6) Unit Office Block to ease the acute office accommodation problems in the district. For a more lasting solution, a thirty-two (32) Unit Office Block is being built. The project is at the roofing stage. On the other hand, a four (4) Unit Staff Quarters is under construction to provide residential accommodation for some of the stuff of the Municipal Assembly. The building has currently been roofed.

Transport and Communication
Roads

The Municipal has a total length of 213.1 km of trunk roads and 240.6 km of Feeder roads. Both the trunk and feeder roads are not tarred but regularly maintained to facilitate the economic activities of the people and enhance the provision of social services.

 

Telecommunication and Postal Services

The Municipal capital enjoys telephone services from a landline facility. Apart from 16 communication centres which offer pay phone services from landline facilities in Enchi, private homes, institutions and public telephone booths are also connected to these land lines. Dadieso and Boinso settlements, which are major market centres rely on ALCON Radio Phone Equipment to tap the service from installations at Kumasi and Takoradi.

 

The establishment of GSM (MTN) Telecommunication network in Enchi has greatly enhanced the work of the business community in particular, individuals and organizations in general. The completion of the District Information Centre to serve as the information hub of the Municipality would greatly improve socio-economic services in the Municipality.

The Municipality has a Post Office in Enchi and Postal Agency in Dadieso through which mails are delivered regularly.

 

Radio Station

The two privately owned Radio Stations in Enchi namely Max FM on 91.7 MHZ and Trickie FM on 99.5 MHZ have been actively involved in educating, entertaining and informing the people about government policies, programmes and other community issues. The coverage is however wider for Trickie FM, thus affording other adjoining districts opportunity to listen in to programmes which are of common interest to the people, institutions and organizations. Business opportunities could therefore be promoted through these avenues.
