The Sissala West District is located in the North Eastern part of Ghana and was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I)1771. It lies approximately between Longitude 213w to 2:36w and Latitude 10:00N 11:00N. The District forms part of the Eleven (11) Districts in the Upper West Region of the country. The Administrative capital of the District is Gwollu. The district sharing border with Burkina Faso on the North which facilitate cross border socio-economic activities. However, this has its own implications for health and crime wave. It covers a total Land area of 4,11289km, which is about 25% of the total Landmass of the Upper West Region. On the East it shares boundaries with Sissala East, to the South with Wa East, to the West with Jirapa District and Lambussie –karni District respectively and to the South Western boarders with Daffiama Bussie Issa District.
The population of the municipality according to 2010 population and housing census stands at 49,573 with 24,151 males and 25,422 females.
